    Rumpelstiltskin focuses on male selfishness, female dependence and the desire to prove one’s worth. Set in the 1800s, in order to make himself appear superior, a miller lies to the king, telling him that his daughter can spin straw into gold. As a result, the characters are entwined in a story of trading goods for services and hierarchal status, with challenging gender norms, prevalent in the era. Learning of the dwarf’s name solves the story: Rumpelstiltskin- a manipulative yet magical character. The base text of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale hinges on a boast, relevant to current society and human nature. Through textual and world-based analysis the base text of the tale is deconstructed in order to justify and explore a complex transformation of the renowned story. The text centred approach to literary analysis, formed in the 1920s, argues that literature operates by defamiliarisng the everyday through its language and form. The text centred approach had most influence on education and then was labelled "new" criticism. Literary techniques were used to complete a complex transformation of Rumpelstiltskin. In my complex transformation of the base text, I employed various text-centred and world-centred theories to dismantle the existing male/female binary and the hierarchal structure of the era.
