stretched in an endless horizon; it was the most spectacular sight, while the first tear drop allowed the rest to create a stream. With tears rushing down my face, I could not do anything but sit across the crawling waves drenching the sand. I reached out for the golden sand and sifted a handful of small worthless stones through the gaps of each finger. The droplets of salty water stung my wounds in my bloody barefoot, as the waves slithered its way up. The pain was numbed by the exhaustion,…
Setting: Soil symbolizes the setting in the novel “Witness” because like the soil is the base of a plant, the setting is the foundation of where and when the story takes place. The specific setting in the book is in “Vermont” and the time period is “1924” (Hesse 1). This provides the reader with a very general and basic idea but does not fully explain the setting. To enhance this, a social setting also exists and it is the main conflict, discrimination developed by the Ku Klux Klan entering…
Generations of Reliability With his fishing rod in tow, an elderly gentleman waves goodbye to his wife and embarks in his Subaru. In another scene, a young man drives along the highway in the early morning with a surfboard attached to his roof. Their stories diverge when they both arrive at the beach to share their love of surfing and the dependability of their Subarus. The commercial for the new Subaru Crosstrek utilizes an effective combination of compare and contrast, pathos, and ethos…
Florida, is the most magnificent place that anyone could ever hope to go. Although it is not often thought of as a primary vacation spot, I believe this marvelous beach has helped to develop my identity into who I am today. The mesmerizing silvery sand; the dreamy sea its own master; the angelic pink palace on the beach; all small components that take part in the alluring beauty of the beach in St. Petersburg. However, simply calling this beach beautiful would be a disservice. Not only is the…
Often times we talk to individuals about their favorite vacation spot or where the place they feel the most at rest is; the response we get most often is the ocean. This is because the ocean is restorative. The quiet roar of the waves, the sound of seagulls chirping, the salty breeze, the ocean is a place of peace. For many the sea is not just a vacation destination, but the sea is a friend. Something that is consistent, and always listening. This is the case for our friend Lettie Hempstock’s…
The song I chose is “Surfin’ U.S.A.”, is characterized by the Beach Boys. I chose this song because of how laid back the tune sounds and makes me want to relax. It’s relaxing because the song reminds me of the beach and the sounds of the waves. In the song it talks about how they will be gone for the summer and to tell the teacher they have gone surfing. The summer always reminds me of the beach and all the surfers in the water. In the 1960’s California was known as the surfing state. The Beach…

One RIKER OXFORD RAY felt the water rush in. Clear blue broke onto the beach, collecting sand over miles down the peninsula. He laughed. There was nothing to do in the night but watch the stars and ocean and laugh. So he stood on the edge of the pier, feeling the break of the water. His hair was dark, and it glistened in the lights. He was of average height, and gauntly featured. Another explosion of water spread before him, like a plain of crystal. He watched the violent swirls of the ocean…
We have just left and we are going to follow the south side of the Platte River. We have to cross the river in about 170 miles. We have heard from other settlers that it's too wide to bridge so we have to use the sandbars to get across. That has been a stressful thought, hopefully no one has any troubles. It's also very shallow which could cause problems because the current will be going at a high speed. After 6 days of travel we have finally met the river crossing. It's current was…
It was evident from the sand dunes on Main Beach, that the further you progressed inland, the vegetation became more dense and abundant. There was no plant species present up until the 40 m mark. This in theory was due to the fact that if vegetation were to occur at the beginning of the transect line, they would be impacted by the strong wave action, which contains high volumes of salinity in it, which then affects the nutrients in the sand making it inefficient for plant growth. The spinifex…
