For people to survive they need at least their most basic human needs met: food, water, safety. Only after those needs have been met can they move on to thinking about their wants. Some people sadly never get the opportunity to even begin to think about the things they want because they hardly have the things they need. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park follows the stories of two people growing up in Southern Sudan in different timelines. They both face struggles beyond what people growing up in first world countries could imagine. Nya and Salva hardly get to think about the things they want because they are struggling just to maintain the things that they need, water and safety. With a war erupting around Salva's timeline he spends his childhood on the run walking dangerously long distances looking for a refugee camp. Water plays a very important role in A Long Walk to Water because it has symbolic and literal roles and it is what brings both of our characters together in the end. Water very literally represents health and life. Symbolically water represents hope, progress, freedom and mobility. The literal meaning of water is something that we need to survive. People need water to be healthy and to live. The main characters Nya and Salva both struggle to have enough water to survive in their childhood. Nya must walk "to the pond and back" (pg. 20) twice every day to bring her family home just a little bit of water. Salva is on the run from the war and traveling by…

So, a personal article like “Law as…

Biblical Literalism in The Scarlet Letter: The Path to God and Social Conformity Biblical literalism is a pejorative that is often used to ridicule the interpretative approaches of fundamentalist Christians, who often hold the ideology that the Bible is God’s work and is authoritative on ethical, spiritual, and moral matters. Similarly, the early Puritan societies in New England advocated for this literal interpretation of the Bible because they also believed that the Bible was written by the…

Survival of the fittest is basically an organism being better fit for an environment than the other. The traditional view on life is very simple, God created us and we were put here for a “reason”. Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection caused conflict between traditional views because it offered a new explanation other than “God” as to why we are here today. Three main challenges Darwin’s theory of Natural selection faces concerning traditional views is the challenge to biblical literalism,…
