area about eight miles south of Zap, North Dakota. Which is in close vicinity to the Medicine Butte Quarry. (See Fig. 2) One could speculate that the Knife River Flint that was collected could be from the Medicine Butte Quarry. Knife River Flint is the most important component for this experiment, so a high quantity of high quality Knife River was needed. The other materials need for the experiment was a regular home oven, a cast iron pot, sand, hard hammer, soft hammer, pressure flaker and a reliable timer, since time plays a large part in this experiment. There a many different ways that can be employed to heat-treat Knife River Flint. The use of a home oven, kiln, fire pit, or a barbeque has been used to heat-treat Knife River Flint. I opted for the home oven method because I didn’t have access to a kiln or a barbeque, and a fire pit would have been hard to accomplish as the ground was to frozen to dig. Knife River Flint can be heat-treated at low temperatures, so a home oven would work for this experiment. The highest temperature of the oven needed to be was 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The Knife River Flint was broken up into smaller nodules. Some of the nodules had its cortex purposely left on to measure if the cortex color changed throughout the heating. A cast iron pot was used as a vessel to house the Knife River Flint. A ¼ inch layer of sand was spread on the bottom of the cast iron pot, and then the nodules of Knife River Flint were placed on top of the…

The downfall to extruding clay parts is that they may require great pressure to push the clay through the die or could emerge with holes if the clay is poorly wedged or too dry. Clay may be experimented with in additives to the clay body. This could be paper, up to 20-30 percent, to make a lightweight fragile clay as the paper is burnt out in the kiln. Wood shavings may also be added to add texture to the clay while also lowering shrinkage and creating a porous body. Metal is sometimes added for…

The clay used to make pottery can be found all throughout Greece, but the finest was from Attica and Corinth. Corinth clay was a pale buff color when fired while Attica clay was more of an orange-red color. Attica clay has high contents of iron and the element illite that gives its pottery glaze a beautiful glow. Black-figure, however, was made with only one type of clay. The clay was found near Athens and had lots of iron in it, which caused it to look black when it is wet. However, when fired…
