stands in keeping its position as the global supremacy. As a group, we spoke about how we saw power today playing out as more of a hard power, rather than soft. With countries growing and building, it is not as easy to use persuasion or compromise to resolve issues. Even Joseph S. Nye, Jr., in his article The Future of American Power: Dominance and Decline of Perspective, states that “power is the ability to attain the outcomes one wants, and the resources that produce it vary in different contexts” (Nye). In Nye’s article, he goes on to give a comparison of power today. He states that power distribution mimics the concept of a three dimensional chessboard. He explains that the top tier represents the military, which our group tied into the idea of today’s global supremacy being approached through hard power. In the middle tier lies economic power, and on the bottom tier, we have “the realm of transnational relations”, basically meaning non state groups such as terrorist organizations and hackers...In other words, China’s impressive economic growth rate and increasing population will likely lead the Chinese economy to pass the U.S. economy in total size in a few decades, but that is not the same as equality” (Nye). After our group explored the definition of power, we moved on to the idea of China becoming the next hegemony. In class, we discussed the likelihood of China becoming stronger than the U.S. in every aspect. We looked at GDP, military strength, and population. In…
As according to (Nye, Jr., 2004), Japan’s strategy in its rebuilding process focused mainly on targeting strategic industries for development, financing major projects, exporting fiercely and protecting infant industries. It appears that the Japanese government puts trust to their industries since then and relied from it in the rebuilding process up to the country’s promotion of positive impression with the rest in the international level up to now. Japan is known for its influential popular…
international relations through the lens of neoliberalism becomes a battle of objectives and prevailing truths, rather than solely a tug of war for power. For example, imagine a hypothetical situation where Pakistan has been threatened by India and preemptively attacks India. China, seeing India as an up and coming rival which it wants to weaken, might come to the defense of Pakistan, supporting Pakistan in the international community, knowing that a weakened India will benefit China as well.…
utilized to organize groups of people. But what makes an effective leader? In Joseph Nye, “The Powers to Lead,” a leader is one who mobilizes their followers to action to achieve shared goals. Therefore, leadership is a relationship between the leader and its followers. Reaching a collective goal is difficult, so leaders use soft and hard power to do so. Soft power is working alongside others in an equal side to side relationship by using negotiation, gathering input, getting consent and…
In this brief excerpt from Joseph Nye's, Hypothetical Situation, we see a very unethical action soon to take place just as we intervene. A local military officer is detected about to execute three villagers for the death of one officer who was shot the night prior. We intervene and we are given the choice to shoot one villager to save two. A quick glance at this and you experience a sense of a philosophical dilemma. There are various ways to go about solving this dilemma and each one of them has…

Riding With Staph “Let ‘er buck boys!” and the chute gate swung open and the beast blew outta there like Mr. Sweeney’s temper when he feels he is being ignored. He exploded into a series of spins and belly rolls. My thoughts were stuck on making the eight second ride, as if it were the only thing that mattered in the world. In great disappointment, I felt a quick pop and recognized that my hand has blown outta the handle on my rope. One, two, almost three more jumps I ride without anything to…
election a wild rollercoaster ride which allowed students who have been following the election to understand and relate to his opinions on the election. He then starts to elaborate on how congressman are not recognized and then proceeds to reference Mark Twain’s quote, “Suppose you were an idiot and suppose you were a member of congress.” Once again, laughter bursts throughout the hall. Afterwards, Updegrove, in essence, tells students that young voters have not been participating in polls and…
