Britain also had a small influence due to the British East India Company that ran through Nepal. Many hostilities occurred between the people of Nepal and the British trade company. Two treaties were signed in 1782 and 1816. (Pearson Education) Nepal is unique in their language as native tribes were isolated in the mountains of the himalayas. To this day many landmarks still carry ancient Kirat names. The language evolved to what is known now as Nepali. Nepal has become very influential in the countries of its proximity thus allowing the Nepali language to be recognized as an official language in the Indian state of Sikkim and in West Bengal's Darjeeling district. Nepali still remains strong as a consistent mother tongue of many native Nepalese people. As Nepal has progressed many citizens learn other languages to assimilate to surrounding cultures and participate in a global economy. The percentage of bilinguals in Nepali is 48.59 % and 55.24% as trilinguals in Nepali. In Sikkim, the main second language is Hindi (77,226) the second most common language learned is English (50,857) and then Limbu (21,317) and others.
