American knows and cherishes. Speaking to each and every individual American, Kennedy compels the country to change the world. Once just a young man striving to make a difference, Kennedy’s speech marks the point when he institutes the change he could previously only dream about. Not only did Kennedy’s words resonate with the people, but his appearance drew people to him. In a photograph taken at his inauguration, Kennedy is conveyed as a youthful, powerful leader. The juxtaposition of Kennedy against the older men behind him symbolizes the beginning of a new era. The weather on that day is bitterly cold, yet Kennedy wears no jacket, in stark contrast with the crowd heavily bundled in winter attire. This illustrates Kennedy as strong and resilient, just as he presents America. Not only is he the youngest, but he is also the first Catholic to step into the presidency, marking a large step forward in American history. This photograph immortalized the moment the “torch” (Kennedy) was passed and Kennedy’s legacy began to take shape. Eleanor Clift’s article, “Inside Kennedy’s Inauguration, 50 Years On,” presents a retrospective viewpoint reflecting back on the fateful day. Throughout the piece, Clift employs pathos to appeal to the reader’s emotions, thus allowing the reader to feel a deeper connection with John F.…
