that they want to leave. Others, like me, and possibly you reading this, had it during high school. Everyone always talked about getting infected with the horrible “senioritis” disease. Well I got infected early with the “junioritis”. I was tired of the people I was forced to be around day to day, I didn’t care about any of my classes, and the dark, gloomy, plain repeating sight of the halls inside Canyon High School were exhausting to look at. I was done. It was about three weeks into my…
Walking into high school as a freshman can be hard, but walking in without a passion for sports can be even harder. This was the situation I was in until I discovered the arts. As a freshman in high school, I was shy and timid; I didn’t talk to many people outside of my friend group. Until I got involved with speech and theatre, I wasn’t myself when I was around people I didn’t know. I was involved in all art programs offered at Okoboji High School over my four years, eventually becoming the…
always been a high achiever, someone who wants to do well in what they do. I was homeschooled from first through eighth grade, and so I taught myself quite frequently. However, as I grew older, I began to think about college, and about where I will be by then. This led to thinking about if I will possess enough knowledge about both simple school related things, and dealing with a school setting. I had never had to sit through classes, or deal with the unique social setting of school. Keeping…
How someone acts in high school usually determines his or her friends, relationships, and even enemies. People with similar attributes tend to stick together, forming a clique, which reinforces stereotypes. The smarter kids are seen as “nerds”, the athletically and physically “superior” are seen as jocks, and the nonconforming unique thinkers are considered “rebels.” I personally do not see myself fitting specifically into one of these categories for a variety of reasons. I have the qualities of…
that adolescents need six to seven hours of sleep since that’s what the average high schooler gets. You could not be more wrong a adolescent need nine to ten hours of sleep every day. This number can be disrupted by any number of things. For instance, homework causes many kids to stay up late finishing it for the following day. If kids are staying up until 12:00 pm. doing homework and wake up at 6:30 to get to school on time, that kid has gotten six and a half hours of sleep no where close…
To some, it is the fundamental essence of living. However, many believe that schools today are killing that part of us. It’s something we have all heard, young or old, that education at it’s current state, wherever that may be, needs reform. Throughout countless reforms and changes, the United States has certainly incorporated creativity into schools, but they haven’t exactly done so successfully. At the two high schools I have been at, I have been at, I have seen the two prevailing attitudes…
new concepts quickly and easily, so I had a ton of spare time while I was homeschooled. I had a few friends at West Delaware before I joined the school system from dual enrollment for classes such as art and music, but the idea of going to school from eight until three, Monday through Friday, was incredibly intimidating. When I first joined public school I tried my best to blend in with the other students, but was about as successful as a turtle in the two hundred meter dash. I endured fifth…
Throughout high school, I was only required to take two history classes to graduate. My freshman year, I took Social Studies because it was the closest class to history that Deltona High school offered. My sophomore year I was able to study World History, which was a brief overview on the backgrounds of different places around the world. U.S. History was the requirement for all junior year students. Even though the course was supposed to go over the history of our own country it didn’t get into…
Being a nerd is the best. I mean, sure you're not going to be the coolest person in school and may get picked on but so what. High school students are naturally pack animals and look to make their pack the largest and most dominant. So yes, those who are alone are going to have a difficult time getting through high school, and generally the ones left out have some sort of nerdy or "wired" tendency. The cool thing is that in real life, unlike in the movies, all the nerdy and weird kids don't…
college high schools into the United States school systems. I am researching how the early college high schools function and their overall impact on the American education. DiMaria, Frank. "The Early College High School Initiative." The Education Digest, vol. 79, no. 1, Fall 2013, pp. 64-68. In this volume of a journal published by Frank DiMaria, he explains the Early College High School Initiative from a Hispanic view. This article involves the description of the Early College High School…
