power and democracy. The face paint shows the dominance of the hunters over the rest of the group. Jack represents dictatorship and dominance over others. Through these 3 symbols, Golding proves that power and authority can lead to bad things, but it is necessary for a civilization to flourish. In Lord of the Flies, the children are forced to enforce rules because there are no adults on the island to keep them behaved. They use conch to keep everything in order. “The conch becomes a symbol of authority: whoever had the conch has the right to speak.” (“Lord of the Flies”). Having this rule allowed the group to stay quiet during meetings, so one person could speak and get their words/opinion out. Without the conch, the group erupts into noise, and everything falls apart as the littluns are running and laughing, and the older ones just walk away and do their own thing. In the novel, Ralph says, “‘Things are breaking up. I don’t understand why. We began well; we were happy. And then-’” (70). The group is acting up, and they are slowing falling apart. The inner evil inside them is taking over and children are slowly starting to disobey Ralph (the leader). The conch is necessary for the group to function efficiently, but the children don’t understand this, and it eventually leads to worser things. After the breakup of Ralph’s group, the children follow Jack and join his tribe. Jack’s tribe consists of hunters. The group of hunters are so focused on killing pigs and getting meat,…
consumed him and eventually he returned to the sport of the “accident” only to find that nothing was there. Instead of easing his mind this finding brought him to a panic because now the police had the body and knew he hit them and he would go to prison for sure. Luckily this man was able to start therapy and medication and is now able to control these urges and live a normal life. This man’s story is a prime example of how different the treatment for mentally ill individuals is. When…
The book, “Things Fall Apart”, by Chinua Achebe gets its name from the poem, “The Second Coming”, by W. B. Yeats. These two written works have many things in common. They share a common theme and back it up with several literary elements. However, “The Second Coming” by W.B Yeats isn’t the only poem similar to the book, “Things Fall Apart”, by Chinua Achebe. “Things Fall Apart” is also similar to another poem called “Welcome Change”, by Gina Whitacre. All three of these pieces of literature…
Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness contain several similarities and differences. To begin with, Okonkwo and Mr. Kurtz seem like two totally different people, but they share many similarities. Next, Chinua Achebe’s portrayal of the african people in Things Fall Apart varies drastically from Joseph Conrad’s portrayal of african people in Heart of Darkness. Also, the practice of displaying human heads differs between Okonkwo’s view and Marlow’s. Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart rejects the…
does not give people a decision. In the novel “Things Fall Apart” it says “ Okonkwo had committed the female , because it had been inadvertent . He could return to the clan after seven years.” ( Achebe , 1959 , page 124) This relates to my thesis statement because okonkwo didn’t have a choice to stay in his village they kicked him out. Another reason to this uncivilized village is because okonkwo is beating on his wife. Igbo village is uncivilized due to okonkwo actions as in physically…
Chinua Achebe 's Things Fall Apart is a novel about the social, and physical struggles that occurred when the white man first arrived on the African continent. There are constant struggles between gender, identity, commodification, and class. Among the men and women in many African tribes that still exist today, there are divergences, which will always remain intact because of the culture and the way in which they are taught to treat each other. The novel is based on a conception of humans as…
Okonkwo’s Suicide in Things Fall Apart In Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo’s suicide is an act of cowardice. Throughout the novel, he tries to prove -- more to himself than to others -- that he is manly and courageous. He does everything he can do to prove this and everything he can do to cover up anything that could potentially disprove this. He overtly shows that he is the best of the best and that he is the “Alpha-male” of the Ibo tribe. What he is really doing though, is getting…
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is about a man named Okonkwo who is respected and honored by the Ibo people, but he is afraid that he will be a coward like his father and he is often cruel. After an incident with a boy named Ikemefuna, Okonkwo’s life changes drastically. A recurring theme in Things Fall Apart is the struggle between tradition, change, and others. This theme is seen after Ikemefuna’s death, Okonkwo’s exile, and the invasion of the white men. The first event is Ikemefuna’s…
The title of a story is one of the most defining things about it, it can take the actual story to a whole new level. Things Fall Apart is a novel by Chinua Achebe. It takes place in Africa around the 1900’s. It is a story about a village and a family who undergo many challenges as well as changes when the white men (British) come and try to convert them to Christianity whilst they struggle to hold onto their old culture and traditions. The title of this book is very important considering it is…
In the novel “Things Fall Apart”, our main setting is the town of Umuofia. In this community and time period, masculinity is a major part of their society. Being masculine almost immediately earns respect throughout the village. This trait is taken so seriously that it is an insult to be called an agbala, or in other words, a woman. The protagonist, Okwonko, is revered all throughout Umuofia. They respected his sense of masculinity and his great work ethic. Unfortunately the apple did indeed…
