My father was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and the way it affected him sparked my interest in medicine. At GCSE level, I learnt that diabetes results when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Further interest led me to learn that the most common drug used is metformin, reducing the amount of glucose released.
