Many theorists associate drag culture with the transgender community because the concept of gender performativity in queer theory implies that the theatrical performance of gender is a form of resistance that undermines the assumed connections among gender, sex, and heterosexuality (Butler 1990, 1993; Garber 1992; Muñoz 1999; Moloney and Fenstermaker 2002). They argue that drag queen and drag king performances are transgressive actions that destabilize gender and sexual categories by highlighting the social basis of femininity and masculinity, heterosexuality and homosexuality, and presenting hybrid and minority genders and sexualities (Butler 1990, 1993; Garber 1992; Lorber 1994, 1999; Muñoz 1999; Rupp and Taylor 2003). However, drag queen and drag king performances do not critique the…

Drag Shows have been around for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a family where it was acceptable to be who you are. Whether you wanted to date someone of the same gender or become a different gender, it was okay in my family. I, however, never had to deal with this difference like some of my relatives. Wonderland, a drag show made up of some of RuPaul’s most talent drag queens such as; Roxxxy Andrews, Kim Chi, Latrice Royale, Naomi Smalls and many others. This was unlike any drag show I had been to before because instead of being in a small bar with limited seating and dingy lighting, it was in a real performance hall where the Nutcracker was being performed the following week. The first thing I immediately noticed was just how many different kinds of people there were that came to see the…
