I started sailing at the age of six or seven at an all girls summer camp in northern Minnesota. Camp Lake Hubert is an award based, there is a series of awards in several areas. From the beginning, I excelled in sailing, winning races to truly understanding the complex sport. There were times when I struggled, but I always persevered and kept going. There are five awards in the sailing program, crewman, seaman, seaman 1st, mate, skipper; skipper being the highest. Each award takes about four weeks to get, until the last two, which take most people six to eight weeks to achieve. Each session at camp is four weeks long. I was determined to get my skipper in one four-week session. It took a lot of hard work and free time to achieve this award. I…
Over the years, children have done unusual things, such as flying a plane at the age of seven. Abby Sunderland had attempted to sail around the world solo at the age of sixteen. While she was sailing, she got caught in a storm and sent an emergency signal to rescue her. This caused a controversy among the media on whether Abby was too young to sail. Abby was fully capable of sailing the world solo mainly because of her legal rights, as well as her experience and passion. Since there was no…
You have someone carving a stick, another starting a fire, another building a fort out of sticks. That night everyone went to bed around five o'clock for two reasons, one to catch up on our sleep and that we've learned our lesson of not staying up extremely late and getting up really early. More days past and with more and more classes and not showering for multiple days on end. Until it came to Thursday, today we were going small boat sailing, we have the first aid and all that, and then we…
If you were a teen, would you go boating by yourself? Boating is “rowing or sailing in boats as a sport or form of recreation” according to google dictionary. The article “Boating Starts Early for Many South Florida Water Kids” indicates that many children start boating when they’re little. “Parents of Rescued Teenage Sailor Abby Sunderland Accused of Risking Her Life” by Paul Harris and “Families Call Off Search for Missing Florida Teens” by CBS News are the two main articles that will be used…
The small dinghy that had dropped anchor in the turbulent waters of Stillwater Cove moved in synchronized rhythm with the undulating waves that knocked against the side and the occupant cursed under their breath, “Damn, the water’s rough tonight. I’m glad I don’t get seasick or I’d be puking over the side right now.” Turning the vessel into the choppy current, they surveyed the surrounding area. Stillwater Cove made the perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway or as the individual on the…
It was a hot, sunny Thursday at Camp V-Bar; “the hottest camp going”. I had just finished teaching my favorite class; fourth period paddle boarding. I was playing a game of sharf with the rest of the Aquatics Staff under the rain fly. After a vigorous game of sharf, which I won, I was off to my next class. It was my fifth period small boat sailing class; a class I did not enjoy. I was not too thrilled about teaching sailing because the people you would teach would have to be engaged during…
He knew she wanted to test the sailboat out on the waters, although he didn't think it was the best idea, he radioed her from his boat telling her the directions she needed to go while sailing through the awful storm. While out on the waters during the storm, the clouds were dark like they would be any storm. With this in mind the audience can take in that possibly the storm meant this would be another rough spot in life for a character in this film. The next day, Charlie found Tess sleeping…
Being a lifelong sailor comes with perks. I have a sixth sense attuned to the sea and wind. It is a wonderful thing to be able to point out North, South, East, and West without the slightest aid. I can always sense where the ocean is when it is out of sight (and will usually be found staring in that direction when I am bored). I can identify and differentiate wind and current lines on the water with only a glance. When I mention that I am a sailor to my friends, their minds usually conjure…
John Williams Written out Speech for class Today I am going to teach you how to be a Pirate. Kind of… I am going to teach you something that all pirates would have known. What is Tacking, and how does it apply to sailing? And no, it is not what the RA’s gave me during room checks the other day. (At This point I will reference the slide that I have on the board. RB means I will be referencing the board during this time) If there is one thing about sailing that you should know, it is you cannot…
Michigan. After I scope out the frigid windy lake, I walk down the bluff to begin my journey of learning to sail alone. As I touch the sand for the first time that day, it felt like I was pushing against a hot iron. As my dad and I make our way to the boat, my dad comes across the question, "Today looks like a nice day for you to try sailing alone, do you want too?". So many thoughts begin to run through my head like I have to answer a question for a million dollars. Knowing my dad, who is short…
