Glucosamine solo, chondroitin sulfate solo, a mixture of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, celecoxib which is an anti-inflammatory drug, and an inactive substance that looks like the study substance which in medical terms is known as a placebo. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate and the sequence of the two were correlated with the placebo to assess whether any of these control groups improved joint pain. Celecoxib, which requires a prescription, has been known to manage osteoarthritis pain by reducing inflammation was also correlated with the placebo to check the validity of the way the study was designed. GAIT was a double-blind study, meaning the participants and the researchers didn’t know who was taking what within the five treatment groups. Participants were treated for 6 months, being assessed at the opening of the study, month 1, 2, 4, and 6. Participants were intently observed for progress of their symptoms as well as for any possible negative reactions caused by the medications. Overall 1,583 participated in the study.
