June 18, 1989 in Kensington, California (General Chemicals, n.d.). Pimentel’s Work While Pimentel was knowledgeable in many aspects of Chemistry, his main focuses in the field were infrared spectroscopy, chemical lasers, molecular structure, free radicals, and hydrogen bonding. Pimentel impacted the subject of Chemistry because of his invention of the chemical laser, his modern technique of matrix isolation in low-temperature chemistry, and his three-center four-electron bond model. Pimentel’s chemical laser works on energy obtained by chemical reactions; these lasers can have a continuous wave output and are high powered, sometimes reaching megawatt levels. The most common uses for the chemical laser are cutting and drilling (General Chemicals, n.d.). Another one of Pimentel’s major contributions to the field of Chemistry was his “development and exploitation of the matrix isolation method for the spectroscopic detection of unstable molecules;” this method led to the discovery of highly reactive molecules that scientists would not have been able to identify under other circumstances (Bancroft Library Staff, 2010). Dr. Pimentel was adamant about sharing his love and knowledge of chemistry with the public which lead to him writing and publishing numerous books and journal articles. Some of his most recognized books include: Chemical Bonding Clarified Through Quantum Mechanics, and Understanding Chemical Thermodynamics. In Chemical Bonding Clarified Through Quantum Mechanics,…
Fact or Science Fiction: Could Lasers become Viable Weapons in Modern World? When I say the word ‘laser’, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Perhaps, like the majority of people, your brain jumps straight to the science fiction. For decades, since 1898 when HG Wells novel War of the Worlds swept the nation, lasers have been popular within the genre of science fiction. From lightsabers, to ray guns it seems lasers have been imagined as a myriad of different weapons. This…
resolution of UEM by generation ~ 30 fs electron pulse (200 KeV) by the optical-gating approach using a visible laser pulse with the strength for probing the matter dynamics. Moreover, the…
4. Why PdO/TiON NP powders are chosen as photocatalyst? There are many reasons why PdO/TiON NP powders are chosen as a photocatalyst for MTBE mineralization under visible light. These reasons are listed and discussed as follows: 1- The synergistic effect. 2- The ease of synthesis. 3- The memory effect. 4.1 The synergistic effect Nowadays, modified TiO2 by metal and nitrogen is considered as one of the most promising TiO2 based materials for photocatalytic applications, which is able to…
Have you ever thought about “alien abductions” where there’s the beam of light that draws the person up into the ship, or in Star Wars, the beam that can dock spaceships? That thing you’re thinking of is a tractor beam. Tractor beams are possible, but they are not yet advanced to the extent of Star Wars or alien abductions. The theory is that beam can reel a particle in towards the source. Currently, there are three types of tractor beams, sonic, light, and laser beams. So far, each kind of…
Pasha’s room had a jacuzzi, Angelina’s room and mine, our own bathroom, Jessica and Pasha had their own bathroom, too. There was a kitchen, a table to eat at, a living room, and there was a washer and dryer. The first game that we did was go-karts and it was so wild! I was so scared because I was going fast, I kept bumping to the sides, and I was last place in the end, but the breeze felt good and the go-karts were so fun and crazy!! Angelina could still use her go-kart pass, but she can’t go…
Astigmatism. Nearsightedness (myopia) is when you can see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects seem blurry. Long-sightedness (hyperopia) is when you can see distant objects clearly, but nearby objects seem blurry and Astigmatism causes overall blurry vision. In most cases, laser eye surgery is pain-free and is completed within 15 minutes for both eyes. It takes 24 hours to see improvement in vision without eye glasses or contact lenses.…
some useful information about the properties of the object or phenomenon under test. Interferometers are used to make very small measurements that cannot be achieved with any other method. An important application of interferometry is in the Laser Interferometer Gravitation wave Observatory(LIGO) which is used to detect gravitational waves predicted by Einstein.1.1 The LIGO interferometer is like the Michelson Interferometer as shown in…
This quote means that the infrared technology highlights the density differences and shows that there is something different in the ground. When this happens, the technolodgy can detect all sorts of things. This saved people lots of time and while they used this technology, they found more artifacts than they usually would. The old way to find a city in a large jungle or forest was to take something sharp and cut your way through all the branches and vines to hopefully find something. The…
As our society becomes more technologically advanced, many things advance with it. This includes criminal investigations, which can be aided by infrared spectroscopy. IR spectroscopy deals with the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This region is light with a longer wavelength and lower frequency than visible light. (Wikipedia) IR Spectroscopy is a method to identify substances based on their absorption of infrared wavelengths. It is a study of how the molecules of substances can…
