    Have you ever said “ I’m on top of the world” when you were on top of something? Well Edmund Hillary was literally on top of the world. Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mount Everest and come back down alive. However, this wasn’t the only famous first he is known for. Along with mountaineer, Harry Ayres, he climbed the southern face of Mount Cook, becoming the first to do so. He was also part of the first all-New Zealander expedition to the Himalayas, and was the first man to reach the South pole in a mechanized vehicle. That isn’t all, he also became the first foreigner to receive citizenship in Nepal, and was the first person to stand at both the North and South poles. Edmund Hillary did a lot in his lifetime, and deserves the fame he has received. Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919 in Tuakau, New Zealand. He attended Auckland grammar school with his brother. On a school trip to Tongariro National park, he saw mountains and snow for the first time, and became inspired. Ignoring this inspiration, he became an air force navigator. There were many mountains around the base where he was stationed, and he scaled many of them. Soon after, he was seriously injured in a plane crash, and returned back to his home. During this time, he continued to climb, and on one of his adventures, he met famous mountaineer- Harry Ayres.
