Jody Gerson Jody Gerson grew up in Philadelphia, where her dad and grandfather ran a nightclub. Dreaming of living in Los Angeles and having a career in the music business ever since a little kid, she interned at The Mike Douglas Show at Los Angeles, CA for two summers when she was 16 and 17 years old, which prepared her for the fast-paced professional environment in the music industry. After graduating from Northwestern University with a major in communications in 1983, Jody Gerson moved to New York City to begin her music publishing career at Chappell Music (now known as Warner/Chappell) as a songplugger, and worked intimately with writers such as Bernie Taupinand and recording artists including R.E.M. and Rod Stewart. I watch the piercing eyes of my preschool classmates as my chest rises and I take a huge inhalation; and I begin my shaky, a cappella rendition of “Sk8r Boi” by Avril Lavigne. As I finish the song, my peers applaud and I am greeted with a feeling of pride and accomplishment that I had yet to know in my previous four years of life. …

Regardless of what people think of their music, it's a historical fact that they're…
