She went to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania but after three semesters She took time off to play professional tennis but then decided to return to California and continue studying at Stanford University . By 1973, she received her bachelor of Science degree in physics and her bachelor of arts degree in English. A couple years later she got her Master of Science. In 1978, she received her doctorate degree in physics and graduated Stanford altogether. In 1977, Sally came across an ad in the Stanford student newspaper that NASA was looking for scientists who wanted to become astronauts, preferably women. She signed up and out of 8,370 entrees, she and five other women passed the entrance exams and psychological testing. After two years of training, Ride was ready, she's assigned to a team that was getting ready to go to space. Towards the end of her training In 1982, she married fellow NASA astronaut Steve Hawley.
