The inspiration came from his belief that men like him held a great responsibility to contribute their wealth for the good of mankind. In his essay “The Gospel of Wealth” he emphasizes on how millionaires should spread their wealth even by leaving a positive impact in the world. He found it as a misleading generosity “Men who leave vast sums in this way may fairly be thought men who would not have left it all had they been able to take it” (Carnegie) and also the money left to the state may not be used properly for the good of people. His last options was giving it back to the community for the good of people during their lifetime however not in the form of “ handouts”. Carnegie’s statement about millionaires sharing their wealth to society, in the form of libraries for example, instead of handouts is his strongest point in…

Balcita goes over similar issues, though on a less broad scale. Using her father’s experiences of immigrating from the Philippines to the United States, Balcita creates an engaging and relatable picture of the subtle moments of integration, while also illustrating how the great American hypocrisy affects this transition.
