    • 4 Pages

The purpose of this lab is to grow crystals on an egg to make a geode using alum powder. The independent variable is the eggshell used. The dependent variable is the amount of alum powder used. The alum powder will be used to make the crystals, while the eggshell will be used to represent the sedimentary rock. The goal is to see if different amounts of alum powder will affect the amount of crystals that grow. In this experiment, the groups’ hypothesis is the more alum powder in the solution, the bigger crystals will form. A geode is a “mass of minerals within a rock that can take thousands of years to form” (Steve Spangler). The word geode is from the word Geoides, which is considered “Earthlike” (Wonderopolis). These rocks form geodes when…

this lab show that the melting point of Alum is 92.5 degrees Celsius. During the first trial a temperature of 91.0 degrees Celsius was recorded, but during the second trial a temperature of 93.0 degrees Celsius was found. Averaging the two temperatures gives a total around 92.0. The literature melting point of Alum is said to be 92.5 degrees Celsius and the data from similar studies, such as, Chemistry 103: Synthesis of Alum, together show that the results from the experiment were about 0.5…

    3. Results and discussion 3.1. Microstructural and EDX analysis Fig. 1 and 2 show the surface morphology and EDX spectrum of FC and alum, respectively after coagulation/flocculation. The EDX analysis shows the adsorption of CB on FC and alum. As determined by EDX, detailed chemical composition of the dried flocs of FC and alum are presented in Table 1 and show that major elements of FC flocs are N, Fe, O, Cl, and of alum are N, Al, O, K, O, S. The weight % of element N defined the…

optimization. Eight different tests will be performed. Four in the first part and four in the second part. Each test will involve about 800 mL of the sample. In the first part, four tests were created of alum concentrations of 0, 5, 20, and 40 mg/L. All were subjected to the stirring apparatus at the same speed of 30 rpm for 15 minutes to allow for flocculation. Initial turbidities were taken before starting the mixing. After being mixed, they were allowed to sit and settle for 20 minutes. Then…

Even though other chemical mordants gave various shades, a pleasant aesthetic appeal was given only by alum. Similarly among the natural mordants, pomegranate rind extract produced better results than orange peel extract. Simultaneous-mordanting technique was identified to be the most effective for using natural mordants. Similarly post-mordanting technique was found to be effective for chemical mordants, which is similar to the results reported by Dhivya et al., 2013. Table 4.2 Percentage…

hypochlorous acid, HOCl) are added to form chloramine, which kills any remaining bacteria and viruses. Chloramine (NH2Cl) is a compound made from chlorine and ammonia. The concentration of chloramine is maintained in the water to ensure bacteria do not re-grow in the distribution system. HOCl + NH3 → NH2Cl + H2O. These substances, while safeguarding the water, may cause a slight odour and can be toxic to aquatic life. For this reason, tap water should not be used directly in an aquarium. It must…
