real- actual social patterns that only approximate cultural experience i.e: According to Chris Hedges we can infer that- American's ideal culture is democracy but our real culture is imperialism |

Popular Culture- cultural pattern widespread among a society's people. i.e. : protestant work ethic, exists as an American value from rich to poor |
