Who's views contradict the 'march of progress' view?
A marxist would claim that social inequalities such as class, gender and ethnicity can be seen among children. There is also an argument that childhood is constructed to create age patriarchy as they have lesser control over their body, time and space.
What is Postman's view?
Postman believes childhood is disappearing due to media influence. In the print culture, children would have to be educated to understand the text however with the new television culture it is much easier as it is accompanied by images and often is is packed with more information. Opie argues that childhood is spreading not disappearing.

Palmer argues that childhood is becoming toxic due to media and fast food. This is supported by the international youth tables, where UK ranked highly for obesity, self harm, drug/alcohol abuse, violence and teenage pregnancy.
