New Labor


  • named to gain trust in society - show they've changed
  • Tony Blair agreed with some New Right ideology
  • helped the poorest (Labor) and the richest (New Right)
  • introduced the New Deal in 1998 - payed more money to single working mums to help pay for childcare
  • introduced EMA (educational maintenance allowance) - gave money to students from poorer families to fund supplies for their education (usually 16+)
  • gave more equality in the family
  • stopped by conservative
  • Criticisms - not always spent on education

Coalition government


  • In 2010 'worrying families' (single parent, anything linked with the underclass) were given social workers to help with children (lib dem) but threatened with fines and imprisonment if their children were truant from school (conservative)
  • in 2010 you got more tax credit (help paying for children etc.) ifyou were a married couple (conservative)
  • Pupil premium started in 2010
  • given to any child that had been having free school meals in the last six years (money for educational success)
  • legalised same-sex marriage in 2014 - caused lots of controversy

Present - conservative

  • increased the amount of money fined for child truancy and decreased amount of support for 'worrying' families - punish the poorest (marxist)
  • cut tax credits because they believed too many people were claiming them that didn't need them i.e. middle class
  • by cutting this across the board the working class lose out
