Claims of SLT
Not all learning is reinforced or involves reflexes. Majority of what is learnt comes from watching others and copying them.
Components of SLT

-Roles can be live (family) or symbolic (celeb)

-Have to be similar, easily observable, need to be important people

-Attention, Retention, Reproduction, Motivation

ARRM

Attention- to the role model, no attention = won't learn it

Retention- to the observed behaviour

Reproduction- of the target behaviour

Motivation- of the target behaviour, e.g. reward

Vicarious Reinforcements
A type of indirect reinforcement, a way to recognize and reward desirable behavior in hopes that it will continue
Imitation

The behaviour of a role model is observed and copied.

Identification
When an individual is influenced by another because they have similar traits or want to be like them.
Modelling
Where a behaviour is observed and then imitated. The person who is influential is the model.
Vicarious Learning
The idea that we learn from others' mistakes or successes.
Vicarious Extinction
When people stop doing something because they have seen that people aren't doing it.
Vicarious Punishment
Where the observer sees the model receiving a punishment for their behaviour.
Supporting Study
Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961)
Aim of the Supporting Study

Demonstrate that children will imitate aggressive behaviour that they have witnessed in an adult.

To investigate whether aggressive behaviour can be gained through modelling and to see whether sex has an effect.

Participants of the Supporting Study

In a lab, using one way glass to observe the 72 children (36 boys and 36 girls) from the age of 3-6.

One male adult and one female adult acting as models.

The Conditions of the Supporting Study
