Focus Area 1: defining technology What are the three ways that technology is defined? |
* technology as hardware * technology as software * technology as organisation of knowledge |
Define the term TECHNOLOGY
Technology is the knowledge and creative processes that may "assist people to utilise the tools, resources and systems to solve problems and to enhance control over the natural and man-made environment in an endeavour to improve the human condition" UNESCO 1985 |
What is 'technology as hardware'?
This refers to tools, machines, instruments, appliances, gadgets and toys that are used in combination with technical knowledge eg mobile phones, robotics, satellites, CCTV etc
What is 'technology as software?'
This refers to the appropriate software that controls the task performed by the hardware technology. eg manage music files, digitally manipulate photos, make on-line purchases etc
What is "technology as organisation of knowledge?"
This refers to the process whereby technological systems are organised, controlled and managed in large production processes and networks eg digital and satellite telecommunications, media, internet, home entertainment etc |
What is "primitive" technology?
Primitive technology refers to tools and methods that were used traditionally and historically to solve problems and enhance human control over the natural and man made environments. |
Provide three examples of 'primitive technology as hardware' |
Appliances: eg stone axe, kettle Gadgets: eg spear, kerosene lamp Toys: eg Glass marbles, wooden building blocks |
Provide three examples of 'primitive technology as software' |
Applications: eg abacus Databases: eg filing cabinet Websites: eg Encyclopedia |
Provide three examples of 'primitive technology as organisation of knowledge' |
Communications: eg smoke signals, morse code Internet: eg Telegram {pre-internet technology} Entertainment: eg transistor radio, playing card games |
What is "complex" technology?
Refers to humans using more sophisticated and technological designs to assist them to solve problems and to improve their condition in both the natural and made environment. eg the further development of rod and bamboo irrigation systems [primitive technology] to fully automated irrigation systems [complex technology]. |
Provide three examples of 'complex technology as hardware' |
Appliances: ice-making combined fridge/freezer Gadgets: vehicles with in built GPS capability Toys: Lego robotic projects |
Provide three examples of 'complex technology as software' |
Applications: eg Adobe Photoshop Databases: eg Microsoft Access Websites: eg Google |
Provide three examples of 'technology as organisation of knowledge' |
Communications: eg Satellites Media: On-line news reporting eg CNN Internet: eg YouTube Entertainment: eg interactive games |
Historical Perspectives What are the two dot points under this heading in the Focus Area "Defining Technology?" |
* the Digital Revolution * the Information Age |
What is the Digital Revolution? |
Refers to the advancement of technology from analogue electronic and mechanical devices (eg a clock with hands, a film camera) to the digital technology available today (eg a digital clock, a digital SLR camera)
} |
What were the features of the digital revolution?
Thedigital revolution started during the1980’s and is ongoing. It started with the evolution of transistor technology (initially introduced in 1947) into the development of the worldwide web (www) or “internet” of the 80’s. |
What are the features of the Information Age?
The‘Information Age’ is linked to the ‘Digital Revolution’ as it reflects a shiftfrom ‘traditional’ methods used in industries (egtelevision and radio as primary sources of ‘home entertainment’ industries) toan industry and economy based on the manipulation of information via the internet. }Today, the internet can accelerate the flow of information more than any otherplatform and is the fastest growing form of media. |
Students learn to: Outline how the nature and use of information and communication technology has evolved. |
}Technologicalchange has always had an impact on the lives of individuals. For many thischange has been significant and for others it has changed minimally (or at avery slow pace). TheInformation Age is characterised by: * theability of individuals to transfer information freely }* tohave access to knowledge instantly and toallow for rapid global communication andnetworking |
