Topic Sentence
I believe that the use of Carnival characters and constumes is central in Mustapha Matura's play, Play Mas.
What is Carnival?
Carnival is a defining event of Trinidad and Tobago culture that incorporates calypso, calinda, steel bands, floats, etc. as well as characters.
What are the costumes and characters?
Some characters seen in Carnival are the English Pierrot and the Pierrot Grenade, who compete in oral performances. Also, the midnight robber is another character, who encompasses the haranguing monologue and duel of rhymes.
Where is this seen in the play?
In the play the use of Carnival characters and costumes is used to convey contemporary Carnival's transformation into a commercialization spectacle.
Frank "A have ter ask yer ter look a de tourist point a view, we have hotels ter fill, one time a de year we does fill dem an if we en' have no Carnival what we go do?" (Matura 157).
Why is this central to Play Mas?
Frank used to be a midnight robber begging for money, in Act II he is not the secretary of commerce fully focused of making money. This shows how carnival characters develop into their costumes and implies that Carnival is no longer tradition.
