General Purpose Line Rope Inspection and Maintenance?

Cleaned by soaking and agitating in a container of warm water and hung out to dry free from sunlight and heat


Inspection - look for - excessive abrasion, cuts, broken strands, powdery filaments, broken fibres, fine powder, change of colour of fibre

A good knot TRUSS?

Tie - easy to tie


R - Recognisable- easily recognised if tied


U - Untie - easy to untie


S - Slip - Will not slip


S - Strength - Will not reduce or damage the strength of the rope when tied

Knot Protocol?

Ensure correct knot is selected


Place tension on line to set and tighten knot


All knots must be removed/released from the line after use


All knots must be inspected after tying look away and recheck


All knots must have no less than 150mm tail after tightening


All knots must be checked by another FF LRL only

Types of Knots and use?

Overhand knot - prevents a line unreeving


Half hitch - prevents a knot from unravelling


Clove hitch - used to secure rope to small gear, used with half hitch


Rolling Hitch - used to tie around cylindrical shaped objects similar to clove


Round turn and 2 half hitches - used for securing a line to a spar or round object


Double sheet bend - used to join ropes of different thickness


Bowline - used to raise or lower an object
