Aim of the study |
To test whether use of positive reinforcement via the Funhaler could improve medical compliance in young asthmatics. |
Research method and design |
RM: Field experiment D: Repeated measures design |
Sample |
★32 children (22 male, 10 female) ★1.5 - 6 years of age ★Random sampling |
Genders, ages, number, sample technique |
Independent and dependent variable |
IV: The device used to administer the asthma drugs DV: Level of adherence to the prescribed medical regime measured by parental responses on a self-report questionnaire |
Procedure |
★Parents asked to complete a structured closed question questionnaire, about parent and child attitudes to medication and compliance BEFORE introduced to the Funhaler ★Throughout the week, parents randomly called on the phone to answer some questions on whether the parent had medicated the child the DAY BEFORE ★After the 2 weeks of using the Funhaler, parents asked to fill in another questionnaire (matched item) to allow for direct comparison) |
3 mains things, types of questionnaire used |
Results and conclusions |
★The Funhaler did improve child and parental compliance ★ 38% more parents medicated their children the previous day (p=0.016) ★60% of children took the recommended 4 ot more cycles (p=0.02) ★Significantly more parents said they were 'always' successful ★Incentives can be used to improve clinical outcomes |

Similarities to Bandura et al |
★Both collected quantitative data ★Both can be applied to modifying childrens behaviour ★Both are developmental psychology ★Both study external influences on behaviour ★Both samples of young children |

Differences to Bandura et al |
★Chaney studied operant conditioning, Bandura studied observational learning ★Chaney was high in ecological validity, Bandura low in ecological validity ★Chaney did a field experiment, Bandura did a lab experiment with observation ★Chaney did random sampling, Bandura did opportunity sampling ★Chaney studied compliance, Bandura studied aggression |
5 differences |
Ethical considerations and problems |
★Informed consent ★High in demand characteristics |
