What are the 3 phylums of macro algae and give an example |
Chlorophyta - green algae Volvox, ulva
Phaeophyta - brown Bull kelp Rhodophyta - red algae Turkish towel
|
|
How can rhodophyta live deep in the ocean |
They have a pigment called phycobilin that can absorb blue light, enabling them to live deeper in the ocean |
|
What type of algae contains fucoxanthin and what is it |
Fucoxanthin is a brown accessory pigment and pertains to the phylum phaeophyta |
|
What is the structure of green algae of phylum Chlorophyta |
Similar photosynthetic pigments and cell walls to plants |
|
(x) What are the 3 types of algae in phylum Chlorophyta |
Unicellular - chlamydomonas
Colonial - volvox
Multicellular - ulva |
|
What are saprophytes |
Fungus like protists that decompose dead or decaying material |
|
How are protists beneficial or harmful to humans and the environment |
Bad kinds of protists include Plasmodium, giardia. Protists can be helpful in cleaning up sewage, uses in food and decomposing dead material |
|
List the 4 types of animal like protists and give an example of each (zooplankton) |
Ciliophora (ciliates) - paramecium caudatum
Zoomastigina (zooflagelates) - giardia
Sarcodina (sarcodines) - amoeba Proteus
Sporozoa (sporozoans) - Plasmodium |
|
Describe the life of the Plasmodium parasite |
Infected mosquito bites a human. Sporozoites infect liver cells and multiply asexually.
Infected liver cells burst and release Plasmodium cells called merozoites that infect red blood cells
Red blood cells burst and the cycle continues. Some cells release gametes that can infect mosquitos.
Mosquito bites human and becomes infected |
|
How do paramecia move |
Move by hair like cilia on exterior of cell |
|
Name some parasitic protists |
Giardia, plasmodium, entameba, trypanosomes |
|
How do amoeba move |
|
|
List the 4 phyla of plant like protists (phytoplankton) |
Euglenophyta - euglena
Chrysophyta (gold colored chloroplasts)
Bacillariophyta (diatoms)
Pyrrophyta (dinoflagellates) |
|
What causes red tide? How? |
Dinoflagellates (pyrrophyta) gonyaulax polyhedron and karenia release harmful toxins that infect shellfish |
|
What are bioluminescents |
Species that give off light when agitated in water (phylum pyrrophyta , dinoflagellates) |
|
What are the 3 types of slime molds |
Water, acellular, cellular |
|
How do humans use seaweed |
Food, cosmetics, fertilizer |
