Alliteration
the repetition of consonant sounds, most often at the beginning of words – used to create pleasing, memorable sounds.
Allusion
a reference to a character, place or situation from another literary work – used to make the poem more interesting or to give additional meaning
Imagery
creating a picture with words appealing to any of the five senses – used to make a poem come alive and create an atmosphere
Metaphor
a figure of speech that compares two basically different things – used to bring things to life in unexpected ways
Simile
a figure of speech that uses the word like or as to make a comparison of two seemly yet like things – used to add color to poetry
Onomatopoeia
use of words that sound like what they describe – used to help the reader hear the sounds and for effect
Repetition
refers to repeated sounds, words, phrase, lines and even whole verses- used for emphasis, to add a sense of unity and/or pattern and to make a poem more musical
Rhyme
repetition of the same sounds in words that appear near each other in a poem, often at the end of a line – used to create a musical effect
Rhythm
the pattern of beats made by stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry – used to create pleasant musical effects
Personification
giving human/animal characteristics to nonliving things creates imagery
Assonance
The repeated use of vowel sounds in the middle of the word
Euphemism
a word or phrase that takes the place of a unpleasant, or impolite reality. The use of passed away for died or made love for sex
High angle shot
Shot from above to suggest vulnerability and weakness
Low angle shot
Low angle shot Shot from below to suggest power or dominance
Close-Up
Shows a person from the shoulders up. This shot is used to show facial expression and emotions of the characters.
Establishing shot
Shot to establish the setting and time period (usually used at the beginning of the film, or a scene). Often a wide shot.
Colour
Each colour suggests certain ideas.
Vectors
Imaginary lines extending from lines created in an image (e.g. pointing) that draw the responder's eye to a particular part of the page.
Symbolism
An image or concrete object that is used to represent an abstract idea.
Framing
Outlined shapes, either naturally occuring (e.g. window frame) or man-made (e.g. box) that separate elements of a visual text.
Repetitions
Ads frequently repeat key words, such as the brand name of a product, to keep the ad simple and memorable.
Jargon
Specialised terminology for a specific group that is often difficult for outsiders to understand. Used to establish a sense of expertise of the company or group.
