what is frostbite?
|
reddish blue discoloration and swelling of the auricle after exposure to extreme cole; pain and tenderness

swimmers ear; infection of the outer ear with severe painful movement of the pinna and tragus, redness and swelling of pinna and canal, scantly purulent discharge, scaling, itching, fever, and elarged tender lymph nodes; hearing is normal or slightly diminished; more common in hot, humid weather

commonly behind lobule in postauricular fold; nodule with central black putnum indicates blocked sebaceous gland; filled with waxy sebaceous material and is painful if becomes infected; often multiple

|
small, whitish ywllow, hard, nontender nodules in or near helix; contain greasy, chalky material of uric acid crystals and are a sigh of gout

what is chondrodermatitis nodularis helicus?
|
painful nodules on rim of helix as a result of mechanical pressure or environmental trauma; small indurated, dull red, poorly defined, and very painful

what is a keloid?
|
overgrowth of scar tissue; more common in blacks; most common at site of pierced ear

what is a carcinoma?
|
ulcerated, crusted nodule with indurated base that fails to heal; bleeds intermittently; refer for biopsy; usually on superior rim of the pinna (most sun exposure) and show chronic discharge thats serosanguineous or bloody

due to narrow, tortuous canal or poor cleaning method; when last 5-10% is occluded person has ear fullness and sudden hearing loss

|
songle, stony hard, rounded nodule that obscures the drum; nontender

|
more common than osteoma; small, bony hard, rounded nodules of bone near the drum; usually multiple and bilateral; more frequent in cold-water swimmers

arises in canal from granulomatous or mucosal tissue; redder than surrounding skin and bleeds easily; foul, purulent discharge; indicated chronic ear disease
