Earthquake

When energy releases as seismic waves from a focus cause the ground to shake

Focus

The point beneath the surface where the plates jolt and energy is released

Faultline

The line between the plates where the focus is located

Epicentre

The point on the earth’s surface

Seismic Waves

The waves of energy released at the focus which cause the shaking within the crust of the earth

Magnitude

The extremity level of the quake measured on a Richter scale. It goes up in 10s so each number you go up it becomes 10x more pewerful

Nepal April 2015

On 25 April 2015 a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal as the Indo-Australian plate jolted at the boundary with the Eurasian plate. It killed 9,000 people and 20,000 were injured in total ~ 8,000,000 people were effected

Primary impacts in Nepal 2015

3 million homes destroyed, limited supply to water and energy, 1.4 million people with no food water and shelter available, 7000 schools and colleges destroyed, hospitals overwhelmed, Kathmandu Airport overcrowded as aid arrived, 50% of shops destroyed reducing food supply and $5 billion damage caused

Secondary Impacts Nepal 2015

Landslides and avalanches in the Himalayas, Mt. Everest avalanche killed at least 19 people, others left 250 missing, landslide blocked the Kali and people evacuated in case of flooding and there was no tsunami as the earthquake was on land
