Narrowest interpretation of health; opposite of health is disease or injury; Absence Of Disease.
CLINICAL MODEL
Health is based on the ability to fulfill societal roles. Sickness is the inability to perform one's work.
ROLE PERFORMANCE MODEL
Health is a creative process. Disease is failure in adaptation or maladaptation.
ADAPTIVE MODEL
Health is seen as a condition of actualization or realization of a person's potential while illness is a condition that prevents self-actualization.
EUDAEMONISTIC MODEL
Ecological model: when the 3 variables (agent-host-environment) are in balance, health is maintained; when variables are not in balance, disease occurs.
AGENT-HOST-ENVIRONMENT MODEL
Health and illness can be viewed as opposite ends of a health continuum
HEALTH-ILLNESS CONTINUUM
Health is a state of being well and using every power the individual possesses to the fullest extent
HEALTH (NIGHTINGALE 1969)
Concerned with prevention or delay of the atual occurance of a specific illness or disease.
ex. maintenace of diet, normal body weight, safe sex, cessation of smoking, and limiting alcohol intake
PRIMARY PREVENTION
Focuses on early detection (case findings and screening) and early treatment of the disease.
ex. breast self exam, TB screening, newborn screening, and genetic counseling.
SECONDARY PREVENTION
Directed toward prevention of complications of a disease and rehabilitation of the individual.
ex. support adaptation to risk, optimal reconstitution, and establishment of wellness
TERTIARY PREVENTION
Focuses on preventing the emergence of risk factors
