Anabolic and catabolic reactions are "coupled", what does this mean?

Catabolic and anabolic pathways are linked by energy. Catabolic reactions provide energy needed for anabolic reactions. Energy either stored or released from ATP.

Practice comparing

Anabolic (build up):

- dehydration synthesis, water removed to create bonds

- endergonic, stores energy

- forms bonds between simpler molecules to build up larger molecules

- products have more energy than reactants

- have +🔼G (non spontaneous)

Catabolic (breakdown):

- hydrolysis, water to break bonds

- exergonic, released energy

- break down larger molecules into smaller simpler molecules

- products have less energy than the reactants

- have -🔼G (spontaneous)

What is ATP?

What does ATP look like?

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the energy carrier molecule of the cell. It essentially acts as energy currency, teanfereing energy to and from reactions.
