The Song of Roland was a 300 year old oral tradition celebrating the battle between Charlemagne's army and a Muslim force at the Spanish border.
What is the significance of the icon in the Orthodox Church?
Icons were considered windows into the word of the sacred; an example would be Jesus Christ being the physical manifestation of God.

Muslims did not utilize icons in their worship, saying that the divinity of Allah could not be duplicated by the hands of man. Calligraphy is used because it render honor to the sacredness of the text.

Similarities - both utilize similar architectural elements (domes, columns), and similar art (mosaics) and had designated areas for church and prayer.

Differences - mosque prohibited the use of pictorial artwork, while there is many instances of icons in Christian churches. (Hagia Sophia being painted over)
