What was the Schuman Plan 1950? |
Devised by the French - supranational higher authority to control coal and steel industries of Germany. |

Compromise solution which set up the EDC - proposed German troops could be rearmed only as part of a supranational European army. |

1- could mean loss of control of British troops. 2- felt it wouldn't be militarily successful. 3- (Bevins view) French wanted to control Europe, particularly Germany, and would delay Western rearmament efforts. 4- could threaten cohesion of NATO. |

How did Eden try to ensure Britain wasn't accused of trying to wreck the EDC? |
-Six signed treaty in Paris, in May 1952 to set up EDC, Eden signed 50 year mutual security treaty with new organisation. -Proposed to increase institutional ties between supranational communities of the Six and the Council of Europe. |

How did the EDC fail? |
EDC still need to be ratified but French changed minds and voted against it. |

Proposed by Eden to extend Brussels Pact of 1948 to West Germany and Italy. Became WEU in 1955. -West German rearmament under NATO supervision with West Germany joining as sovereign state. -France accepted terms. |
