Trade without barriers of any kind
**Although nearly all countries still have some barriers to trade**
Protectivism
An economic strategy to limit trade. Governments construct "barriers" (such as tariffs and subsidies) to restrict trade in order to help their domestic businesses
Comparative Advantage
A business, person, or country with the resources to produce a good or service more efficiently than another
WTO (World Trade Organization)
An international organization aimed at expanding trade
Why do some groups criticize the WTO?
-Even though each country gets one vote, some have more power than others
-Richer countries have more strength in negotiating because their economies are larger and more important
-Agreements do not do enough to make sure trade helps poverty
"Fair Trade"
An alternative to free trade in which everyone has an equal opportunity for gain
NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)
A regional trade agreement created to lower barriers to trade among North American countries

-Allows people to specialize in the production of goods and services in which they have the resources to be successful
-New markets to sell goods produced in the home country
-Improving international relationships
-Boosting economies of allies
-Wide variety of less expensive goods

-Can disrupt local economies
-People without critical resources (money, location, etc.) are less likely to gain

Government gives money to certain industries so that those businesses can charge lower prices and be more competitive on the world market

-Encourages trade
-Increased trade has the potential to make everyone better off
-Goods become less expensive
-Countries grow faster
-Helps decrease poverty and inequality (better standard of living)
-Dependency among countries
Negatives of free trade...
-Developing countries have less developed industries and may be less able to compete
-Unfair because labor is much cheaper in poor countries (businesses move to those places and workers in rich countries lose jobs)
-Losers outnumber winners
-Losers are typically found among the working class and poor
-Countries become too dependent
-Economic downturns quickly become worldwide problems

Pol Pot believed the people were too westernized and wanted a simple farming society.
Holocaust
Hitler and the Nazis blamed Jews for Germany's economic struggles and turned people against them.
Armenian Genocide
Turkish leaders targeted Armenians because they were a Christian minority.
What did the Genocide Convention allow?
It allowed foreign countries and organizations to examine internal affairs of countries. Outside countries could have say in the punishment of genocide criminals.
What caused the White House to push for ratification of the Genocide Convention in 1986?
President Reagan visited a German Nazi soldier cemetery in 1985 to demonstrate a solidarity with Germany. Many US citizens criticized and the Convention was ratified. Reservations to protect US sovereignty remained.
