Aim of a fire investigation

Establish most likely cause of A fire, identifying trends, defects or acts causing a fire.


Establish reasons for development and spread of fire


Asses the performance of building contents in a fire situation


Check effectiveness if fire safety provisions in a building


Provide other information for by the lfb and other agencies in the future

The fire investigation team may assist the IC if:

They cannot determine cause if the fire


Suspects a possibility if rekindling


If refused entry to an incident for the purpose of a fire investigation


Needs to take samples as part of the investigation


Required support and advice at the scene

A single fire investigation unit will be ordered to events with:

4 pump fires and above


Persons reported, fire survival calls and fatal fires


Firefighter emergencies

The IC must request attendance of the police if:

There is a fatality


Serious injury


Cause of fire deemed suspicious


Complete an rff1 form

Define evidence

A means of providing and unknown or disputes fact

Types of evidence firefighters can identify:

Physical


Visual


Audible


Smells or odours

What ways can evidence be best preserved

Minimise personel in affected area


Limit water damage


Leave dead bodies in situ


Record locations and movements of people involved


Do not disturb contents or debri


Dint cut or turn over unless IC orders


If accelerant is suspected restrict movement in the area


Clearly and accurately record information


Turn fuse boards off


Eye witness or occupants must be directed to the IC

Do not leave water bottles or containers at the scene


If anyone is bleeding inform the police


Never sweep up glass from the windows at a crime scene

If a person is found and it is obvious that life is extinct, the following points apply:

All information about the body must be passed onto the police


Bodies left in place


If a body is moved due to fire conditions make sure the original location is noted


Any items of clothing or jewellery that has fallen off when moving the body is gathered


Command units carry fatality identification systems and body bags


Information about bodies must not be given to unauthorised persons
