Describe how each of the following served to inflame tensions in Europe: nationalism, imperial rivalries, militarism.
nationalism - France and Germany had a lot of tension because of their growing economies and militaries and their past battles
imperial rivalries - Germany and France disputed their control of Morocco
militarism - nations expanded their militaries and created a tense arms race to gain the upper hand
Why did European nations form alliances?
Primarily because they distrusted other countries.
How did alliances increase fears of war?
With more alliances, the scale of a war would be much greater.
Reread Bismarck's statement. Why do you think he made this prediction?
He practiced Realpolitik, so he believed that countries gaining power at all costs would create conflict that would escalate into a huge war.
Do you think the idea of going to war excites young people today in the same way that it did 100 years ago? Why or why not?
Reasons it may be less exciting: nationalism isn't as strong as it used to be, and the kind of war has changed style.
