Explosive Ordnance

All munitions that contain explosives, pyrotechnics, or CBRNE that cause death /injury to personal or damage to material

Ordnance

Explosive, NBC munitions, pyrotechnics, bombs, guns, and ammunition

Munitions

In a restricted sense, ordnance items such as bombs, rockets, projectiles, and grenades

Nomenclature

Identifying name for ordnance items

Artillery Ammunition

Ammunition of a caliber greater than 30mm and not designed for shoulder or hand firing

Fixed

Semi-fixed

Seperate

Bullet

A projectile fired, or intended to be fired from a small arm

Detonation

An explosion, a chemical reaction/burn that surpasses the speed of sound creating the detonation velocity which ruptures the outer container of explosive, if any

High Order Detonation

Achieved when the detonation velocity is equal to or greater than the stable detonation velocity of the explosive

Low Order Detonation

Achieved when the detonation velocity is lower than the stable detonation velocity of the explosive

Deflagration

Very rapid combustion, sometimes accompanied by flames and sparks

Burning

Charge

A given quantity of explosives, by itself or contained within a bomb, explosive, projectile, mine, or used as a propellant for a bullet or projectile

High Explosive

An explosion that will normally detonate rather than deflagrate or burn

Low Explosion

An explosion which deflagrates or burns rather than detonates

Grenade

Small fragmentation defensive or blast offensive ordnance originally designed to be thrown by hand, but now also designed to be projected from rifles, special launchers, and dispensing munitions

Projectile

An object projected by an applied force; within EOD it is generally applied to artillery rounds/recoilless rifle rounds

High Explosive Plastic (HEP)

Thin cased projectile that is designed to defeat Armored objects. Squah, Head, or Bunker buster rounds

Rocket

Unmanned, self-propelled ordnance with or without a warhead that when launched its flight cannot be controlled

Bomb

Explosive or CBRNE that is dropped from an aircraft

Submunition

Small munitions with no standard size or shape, which are dispensed from cluster bombs, projectiles, and/or rockets

Mine

An explosive or other material, normally encased, designed to destroy or damage ground vehicles, boats, and aircraft or designed to wound, kill or otherwise incapacitate personnel. It may be detonated by the actions of its victim, passage of time or by controlled means

Antipersonnel

Small munitions or mines designed to kill or preferably wound personnel

Antitank

Large munitions or mines designed to kill tanks or other large armored vehicles

Spin Stabilization

The spinning of a projectile caused by the rifling in a barrel, keeping it straight in flight, not tumbling

Fin Stabilization

Insures the steady flight of the ordnance with the use of fins

Rifling

The spiraling grooves in the gun tube that create the spinning of the rounds

Smooth Bore

Gun tube that is smooth inside. It does not impart spin to the round

Strong Back

Bar, timber, or metal beam designed to take the strain. For example, portion of the bomb that contains the suspension lugs and supports the weight of the bomb

Cartridge

An assemblage of the components required to function a weapon once

Sabot

A carrier for a sub-caliber projectile so that it may fit into a larger bore gun. the carrier is usually discarded after it is fired from the gun

Armor Piercing

Designed to penetrate armor or other similar material

Stand Off

Distance from the base of a shaped charge to the target that gives the jet time to form for penetration

Graze Sensitive

The ability of a fuze to be initiated by grazing the surface at a glancing angle

Fuze

Initiator for ordnance and the attacking point for most RSP procedures

Safety

A device that prevents ordnance from being fired accidentally

Fuze Adapter

Allows the fuze to be attached to various sizes of ordnance (155mm to 105mm w/ same fuse). On a bomb it may connected to the parachute to assist in chute deployment

Safe and Arming Device

A mechanism whose primary purpose is to prevent an unintended functioning of the main charge prior to completion of the arming delay and, in turn, allows the explosive train of the ammunition to function after arming

Cocked Striker

A striker/firing pin/detonator that are held under tension by a releasing mechanism such as a safety pin on a grenade

Hung Striker

A striker/firing pin/detonator which remains Cocked and under tension, after the releasing mechanism is removed due to and obstruction such as sand or dust

Misfire

Failure to fire or explode properly. Failure of a primer or propelling charge to function in a normal or expected manner

Malfunction

Failure of ordnance to function in a normal or expected manner

Dud

Explosive munition which has not been armed as intended or which has failed to explode after being armed

Hygroscopic

Substance that absorbs and holds water, particularly from the air

Fragmentation

Term used with ordnance that is designed to break apart or fragment during detonation

Base Ejection

The rearward ejection of the base of a projectile along with its contents

Airburst

An explosion of a bomb or projectile above the surface of the ground

EOD Procedure

Action taken by EOD to render safe, disassemble, neautralize or dispose of ordnance, in which the EOD Soldier observes the safeties first

Render Safe Procedure (RSP)

The portion of the EOD procedure which is designed to prevent the detonation or functioning of the explosive ordnance. It is normally accomplished with the aid of special tools and techniques

Disruption

Technique to cause the main charge to low order or during IEDs, cause a break in the firing train

Improvised Explosive Device (IED)

Those devices placed or fabricated in an improvised manner incorporating destructive, lethal, noxious, pyrotechnic or incendiary chemicals, designed to destroy, disfigure, distract or harass

Ground

The flow of current from an item in an electrical circuit to the ground. A physical connection with the Earth to equalize potential and to discharge stray electrical charges, preventing a Soldier from prematurely activation electrical components
