The nature of the mission is unclear to us but it appears that it may have been to promise the throne of England to Duke William of Normandy upon the childless Edward’s death. When Edward does die soon thereafter Harold is crowned king and immediately after this (with the help of hi half brother Odo bishop of Bayeux), Duke William invades England in 1066, wins at the Battle of Hastings. Although the tapestry is damaged at the end, we know the William was crowned king. |
