Prokaryotes (bacteria and archae) have cytoskeletons which are homologous of eukaryotic cytoskeleton components (like actin and microtubules). What is the cytoskeleton important for?
Cell division
Positioning of cytoplasmic components
Cell shape
Ribosomes create proteins in the cell.
How are prokaryotic ribosomes different from eukaryotic ribosomes?
Bacterial ribosomes:
- made of protein and rRNA
- 70S ribosomes = smaller than eukaryotic ribosomes (Eukaryotes have 80S)
- slightly different structure
- perform same exact functio
- have 2 subunits (small subunit and large subunit)
What does the S stand for in 70S, 80S, etc? What does it measure?
S stands for Svedberg and is a unit that measures size, not weight.
