Vietnam: 1945-1954

US backs French war effort to regain its colony, mostly financial. Criticized by a lot of the world because it goes against self-determination.

Vietnam: 1954-1964

French lose horribly at Dien Bien Phu, US becomes primary anti-communist force. Backs Ngo Dinh Diem against Ho Chi Minh. 'Advisors' sent to teach counterinsurgency, fight VietCong, prop up Diem.

Vietnam: 1964-68

Gulf of Tonkin incident begins US engagement, troops sent to fight North Vietnamese Army and VietMinh. Operation rolling thunder: strategic bombing. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: blank check to Johnson. My Lai massacre: everyone killed for potentially sympathizing with VC.

Vietnam: 1968-1973

Jan 30 '68, Tet offensive attacks every US troop installment at the same time during a supposed truce. Everything is televised, credibility gap develops between what Johnson was telling everyone and what media showed. Nixon becomes president, withdraws 150,000 troops in first year. 'Peace with honor'.

Domestic effects of Vietnam

President has massive control of war. New Left/Students for Democratic Society oppose involvement. Support runs to Canada, draft card burnings, weather underground, Kent State protests.




First US war publicly and popularly protested.

End of the war

Nixon's 3 point plan: Secret talks with NVA, Vietnamization of ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam, teach them how to fight on their own and leave), widen the war into Laos and Cambodia. 'Peace with honor'.




Eventually US bails and Saigon is overrun. Jan 73: paris peace accords, US has 60 days to leave.
