What is a base? |
Is stronger and thicker than a liner, and provides thermal insulation. |
What are composite cements? |
are composite materials with a higher percentage of resin and smaller particle sizes to reduce viscosity. |
What is eugenol? |
Is an organic liquid that is also a weak acid. It is a major component of oil of cloves. |
What are glass ionomer cements? |
Are formed when a glass powder is mixed with an aqueous solution of poly-acrylic acid. |
What is a liner? |
Is used to protect the pulp from chemical irritation. It may stimulate secondary dentin formation or release fluoride. |
What are luting agents? |
The cements used to lute or glue dental restorations. |
What does obtundent mean? |
Means that it reduces the irritation to the pulp. |
What is a polycarboxylate cement? |
If formed when zinc oxide powder is mixed with an aqueous solution of poly-acrylic acid. |
What are resin cements? |
these are what composite cements are sometimes referred to. |
What are silicate cements? |
Is formed when a glass powder is mixed with phosphoric acid. |
What are temporary cements? |
are used to retain a temporary restoration while the permanent restoration is being fabricated. |
What is varnish? |
Is composed of resins dissolved in a solvent. |
What is zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) cement? |
Is the result when zinc oxide is mixed with eugenol. |
What is zinc phosphate cement? |
Is formed when zinc oxide powder is mixed with phosphoric acid. |
Name two things that provide pulp protection. |
*Bases - provides thermal insulation
*Liners - may stimulate secondary dentin formation (calcium hydroxate) |
What protects the pulp from an irritating base or cement? |
Varnish - frequently used under amalgams |
Name three liquids used in dental cements. |
*Eugenol - Component of oil of cloves
*Phosphoric acid - may be irritating to pulp
*Poly-acrylic acid. |
Name five kinds of dental cements. |
1. ZOE (zinc oxide eugenol) 2. Zinc Phosphate 3. Glass Ionomer (and resin modified) 4. Polycarboxylate 5. Composite |
Name two disadvantages of ZOE cements. |
1. inadequate strength
2. High solubility |
Name a disadvantage of zinc phosphate cement. |
Irritating to the pulp - low PH |
Why is a cooled glass slab used when mixing zinc phosphate cement? |
It has an exothermic reaction. |
What are two advantages glass ionomer cements? |
1. They bond to tooth structure
2. They release fluoride |
What is the cement of choice for luting metal or ceramometal crowns? |
Resin modified glass ionomer |
Name a major disadvantage of polycarboxylate cement. |
It is not strong enough |
Name three advantages of polycarboxylate cement. |
1. Biocompatable
2. Releases fluoride
3. It bonds to tooth structure. |
Name a liner that promotes the formation of secondary dentin. |
Calcium hydroxide (Dycal) |
What is the composition of Temp Bond, a temporary cement? |
Zinc Oxide and vegetable oil |
Which type of cement is available in a single-dose capsule, much like that of a silver amalgam filing material? |
Glass ionomer |
Two dental cements that are used for caries control are? |
1. Glass ionomer
2. ZOE |
True or False
ZOE has the ability to release fluoride. |
False |
Which cement is the most soluble? |
ZOE |
When glass ionomer is mixed too slowly, the resulting mix is: |
Thick |
Cements are __________ soluble than the overlying restoration. |
More soluble |
During mixing, which cement should use as much of the area on a glass slab as possible to reduce the exothermic reaction? |
Zinc Phosphate |
Which of the dental materials promotes the formation of secondary dentin? |
Calcium hydroxide |
What is a common additive to glass powder, reduces melting temperature, and improves the flow of molten glass? |
Fluoride |
The cement of choice for luting ceramic restorations to tooth structure is? |
Composite |
The disadvantage, or drawback, of using polycarboxylate cement is? |
Lack of strength |
ZOE may be used for what? |
Temporary restorations Intermediate bases Luting temporary crowns. |
