chesapeake bay
Life in the chesapeake at this time was brutal, nasty, and short for settlers. Not family oriented.

Bacon's Rebellion
A mass of foot-loose freemen that roamed the Chesapeake. Led by Nathaniel Bacon. Revolted in 1676. They resiented Berkley. Bacon died of disese during the revolt. Berkeley crushed the uprising soon after.

Governer of Virginia. Crushed Bacon's rebellion.

middle passage
the ride from africa. 20 % of african slaves died.
colonial slavery
Slaves were brought in masses to farm tobacco in virginia and maryland. Severe in the deep south, farming rice.
Stono rebellion
Took place in 1739. Resentful blacks revolted in south carolina along the stono river. made their way to florida but were stopped by local millitia.
New York slave revolt
erupted in 1772. cost lives of 7 whites and 21 blacks. some burned at the stake.

70 % of the leaders of the Virginia legislature came from the "First Families of Virginia" who were all estabolished in Virginia prior to 1670
