Cell Theory

-A cell is the basic stuctural and functional unit of living organisms.

-The activity of an organism depends on both individual and the collective activies of its cells ( complementarity)

Plasma Membrane

Active barrier seperating inra / extracellular fluid. Controls what leaves and enters cell.

Fluid Mosaic Model

Double layer of lipid molecules with protein molecules "plugged into" it.

Hydrophilic Lipid

Phosphate heads (water loving) are polar/charged

Hydrophobic Lipids

Fatty acid tails (water hating) are non polar

Integral Proteins

Firny inserted into cell membrane.

Both hydrophobic/philic regions

Transport proteins (channels, carriers)

Peripheral Proteins

Loosely attached to integral proteins

Intracellular surface used for membrane support

Function as enzymes, motor proteins for shape change during cell division and cell to cell connections

Glycocalyx

Sugars(carbs) sticking out of a cell surface. Cell recognition.
