What is the definition of a LAN?
A LAN includes all devices in the same broadcast domain.
From the perspective of broadcast domains, what is a VLAN?
Switches separate ports into different VLANS to put them in different broadcast domains.
What are some reasons for using VLAN's?
1. To logically group individuals or devices. 2. To reduce overhead by limiting the size of each broadcast domain. 3. To enforce better security by keeping sensitive devices on a separate VLAN. 4. To separate specialized traffic such as VOIP.
What is VLAN trunking?
When you have VLAN's distributed across multiple switches, the switches need to be able to tell which VLAN traffic was sent from.
What trunking protocols do Cisco switches support?
Inter-Switch Link (ISL) and IEEE 802.1q. (ISL is proprietary, so it can only be used between 2 cisco switches).
What is the difference between the way ISL adds a VLAN identifier and the way 802.1q does it?
ISL completely encapsulates the frame in an ISL header. 802.1q doesn't encapsulate, it just adds an extra 4-byte header field to the middle of the original Ethernet header. Then it has to recalculate the FCS.
Which trunking protocols support multiple spanning trees?
Both ISL and 802.1q support multiple spanning trees, but ISL did so much sooner.
Do switches forward frames between VLAN's?
No. Different VLAN's are, by definition, different subnets. Only routers can forward frames between VLAN's.
