What is this?
Lycopodium. Note the spiraling leaves and that it creeps on the ground like a "moss".
What is this a cross-section of?
Lycopod stem.
What type of cross section is this? What is the stele?
Lycopod stem.
Exarch Protostele (plectostele) |
What is this?
Strobulis of lycopodium

What is this structure and its function? Which families have this?
This is a ligule. The ligule may function as a secretory organ, secreting water and mucilage to keep the leaf moist.
Selaginella and Isoeteaceaes have these. |
What leaves do this belong to? How are the leaves arranged?
Selaginella.
Heterophyllous (leaves of different size and/or shape) |
Where is this stele found? What type is it?
Selaginella. Exarch Protostele.
st = stele trab = trabecula (endodermis) |
Where is this stele found?
Selaginella
What is this? What are some other physical characteristics of it?
Equisetum.
Other conspicuous characteristics of the genus include its arrangement of branches and reduced leaves (often scale-like) in whorls at the nodes of the hollow, jointed stem, its silicified epidermal cells, and its sporangia organized into conspicuous strobili. Equisetum is homosporous with small, photosynthetic gametophytes. There have been some reports that a mycorrhizal association may exist in some non-photosynthetic species. |
What stem does this belong to? What type of xylem differentiation is this?
What is the purpose of carinal canels? |
Equisetum. Endarch
Carinal canals probably function in water conduction. |
What are the arrows? What type of xylem differentiation is this?
Arrows are casparian strips.
Siphonostele Endarch. |
What does this belong to?
What is the entire structure called? What are the individual hexagonal structures called? |
Entire structure: Strobilus
Individual hexagonal structures: Sporangiophores |

Label the circular thing and the stringy thing.
What is the function of the stringy thing? |
Circular thing: Spore
Stringy thing: Elater Elater: Four cover the spore. These are extensions of the spore coat that respond quickly to moisture change. They uncoil as spores dry helping the spores to disperse. |
