|
First school for American Painters. Located in New York on the Hudson. Painted overexadurated, rugged scenery of nature. Nationalistic. Included painters such as Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, Thomas Doughty, and Asher Durand.

Shakers
|
Derogatory name derived from a ritualistic dance in whish shakers "shake" themselves free of sin. Established by "Mother" Ann Lee in the 1770's. A faith that was voluntary and there were about 6,000 members in the 1840s. Shakers believed in equality amongst both males and females, and saw God as neither male nor female. All Shakers practiced complete celibacy. This faith was created mostly on the fact that the members wished to escape the American world at that time.

|
Term applied to the region of western New York along the Erie Canal, and refers to the religious fervor of its inhabitants. In the 1800's, farmers there were susceptible to revivalist and tent rallies by the Pentecostals (religious groups).

Dorothea Dix
|
A reformer and pioneer in the movement to treat the insane as mentally ill, beginning in the 1820's, she was responsible for improving conditions in jails, poorhouses and insane asylums throughout the U.S. and Canada. She succeeded in persuading many states to assume responsibility for the care of the mentally ill. She served as the Superintendent of Nurses for the Union Army during the Civil War.

Seneca Falls convention
|
July, 1848 - Site of the first modern women's right convention. At the gathering, Elizabeth Cady Staton read a 'Declaration of Sentiment' listing the various discriminations against women, and adopted eleven resolutions, one of which called for women's suffrage.

American Colonization Society
|
abbreviated ACS, this was a group founded by a group of white Virginians in 1817 which worked carefully to challenge slavery without challenging the property rights of the southern people. They believed that there should be a gradual freeing of the slaves and the masters would receive compensation in funds from charity or the state legislature. It helped ship several groups back to Africa in 1830 where the nation of Liberia was later established in 1846. (it's capital Monrovia was named after the American president who presided over the initial settlement) In the end, the ACS ran out of public funding and didn't carry out its vision envisioned by its supporters. Finally after a decade they disappeared because no amount of funding would ever be enough to transport all the slaves back to Africa. By 1830 the anti-slavery movement was slowly losing strength.

An abolitionist and editor. The press he used was attacked four time and Lovejoy was killed defending it. His death was an example of violence against abolitionists

Prigg vs. Pennsylvania
|
1842 - A slave had escaped from Maryland to Pennsylvania, where a federal agent captured him and returned him to his owner. Pennsylvania indicted the agent for kidnapping under the fugitive slave laws. The Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional for bounty hunters or anyone but the owner of an escaped slave to apprehend that slave, thus weakening the fugitive slave laws.
