In Dita Wickins-Drazilovás article, “Zoo Animal Welfare” published to the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics in 2006, she discusses the criteria that zoos claim justifies the welfare of the animals and how this criterion is not satisfactory. Wickins-Drazilovás states, “Zoos often claim that having healthy, long-lived animals that reproduce is sufficient proof of good care. I believe that these three criteria have to be examined more closely and also that there are other important criteria of zoo animal welfare: natural and abnormal behavior, freedom and choice, and dignity.” The physical health of captive animals will without a doubt be better than the health of the animals in the wild. They are provided with veterinary care and pain killers.…

Many zoo animals get zoochosis when forced to live in artificial constructs. There was “one zoo, wild-caught capybara showed increased escape behavior whenever keepers entered the exhibit, despite having been in captivity for over 2 years” (Morgan 280). This shows that zoo animals are forced proximity to humans which causes stress for the animal. The animal does not want to interact with humans and it wants to escape. There was also a case with a gorilla.…

Animals are often held up in small enclosures where they become frustrated and aggressive. Being locked up prohibits the collection of their own food. As clearly stated in “Zoos: Pitiful Prisons”, “Some animals are confined next to their predators, and some are held in crammed, barren environments where they are constantly bullied by cagemates” This shows that animals are exposed to unacceptable environments that no one would want to live in. The other side may argue that zoos have noticed the treatment and changed their ways.…

This is all wonderful, but there are many downfalls to zoos as well. A few of those such downfalls are lack of natural living, increased stereotypes, and increased stress. A lack of natural living refers to both the environment and the animal’s behavior. A zoos enclosure may come close to many of the animal’s natural habitat but they are not exactly the same as the animal’s natural habitat (animalsupport.org). Also an animal’s natural behavior will be affected by being in a cage (greengarageblog.com).…

Some say zoos are wicked or evil, some may say zoos are great and interesting. In my opinion, I'd go with the fact that they're great and interesting. The main point of zoos is to educate people and save animals, but mostly save the animals. In fact, some animals live longer in the wild! Take giraffes for instance, they live up to 26 in the wild, but they live way longer in zoos than in their natural habitat.…

In fact, at the beginning of the 20th century, there were about a few million African elephants and about 100,000 Asian elephants in the world, but now there are about 450,000 African elephants and 35,000 Asian elephants because of poaching. Also, rhinos are also poached, and actually, about 2 rhinos a day are killed for their horns. Anyway, zoos have medical centers so if the animals get hurt or sick, the animals won’t just lay there to die or just move along without treatment like they normally would would if were in the wild, but instead zoos will help animals feel better. So basically zoos will expand an animals life, not shorten it.…

Zoos lie to you about the animals. Many zoos claim that the reason why they exist and continue to breed animals is to help protect endangered species, but that not true. In fact most animals in zoos aren't endangered, and those who are likely never be released into natural habitats. I think we shouldn't have zoos. Living without the important things to them can cause “zoochosis” which is a condition animals act strangely even hurt themselves from boredom or frustration.…
