Zinc is a trace mineral that is necessary for growth, healing, and overall health. It helps more than 100 enzyme systems. It is used in metabolic reactions in cells. Zinc aids in immune system function, the growth of bone, teeth, and connective tissue, and gene regulation. Meat, fish, and poultry contain the best-absorbed form of zinc. However, fortified cereals and legumes also contain zinc. Zinc can also be consumed by taking a supplement. A deficiency in zinc can cause growth retardation, delayed sexual maturation, eye and skin lesions, hair loss, and an increased risk of illness and infection.

Zinc plays an important role in calcium. Calcium uses zinc as a enzyme catalysis and to maintain structure ( Alberts, Nadassy & Wodak, 1998). Zinc is able to maintain the structure of calcium by stabilizing its folded conformation. Zinc will also bind to the carboxyl group of the substrate in order to stabilize the enzyme-substrate complex. The zinc sites exhibit a tetrahedral geometry.…

Dark green vegetables such as spinach may provide up to 80 mg; and beans and nuts are also a useful source, a single ounce of hazelnuts or peanuts, for example, supplying almost 50 mg of magnesium. Milk may also supply around 30 mg.
